CausesAppropriate Tests

Pyogenic infection, especially 

  • Streptococcus 'milleri'
  • Klebsiella spp.
  • Polymicrobial infection

Pus - microscopy and culture obtained by aspiration under diagnostic imaging guidance. Blood cultures; FBC, CRP or ESR; AST, ALT, ALP.

Amoebic infection 

If amoebic abscess is suspected in a patient from an endemic area, Entamoeba histolytica antibodies should be done urgently to avoid unnecessary aspiration.
