| Specimen | Endoscopic biopsy specimen. |
| Method | Separate containers should be used for each biopsy from different sites. Ideally the biopsy should be placed on to a small square of paper, orientated with the mucosa exposed and placed in formalin fixative. Light microscopy, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry. |
| Application | Investigation of symptoms of reflux and dysphagia, acute and chronic oesophagitis, oesophageal polyp, Barrett's oesophagus, and surveillance of oesophageal dysplasia, malignancy. |
| Interpretation | Report by pathologist identifies nature of lesion sampled. In case of tumours type, grade and stage is reported. |
