24 hour urine collection in a lead-free container with HCl (also lead free) as preservative.

Method

Atomic absorption spectrophotometry.

Reference Interval

<0.25 µmol/24 hours.

Application

Monitoring the effect of chelation therapy in lead poisoning.

Lead excretion after EDTA infusion is the preferred investigation for past exposure to lead, if blood lead is normal.

Interpretation

Lead excretion >0.25 µmol/24 hours indicates an increased body burden.
