Item Process
Specimen

10 - 30 mL heparinised blood (consult laboratory).

Method

Several methods including chemiluminescence, nitroblue tetrazolium, dihydrorhodamine.

Application

Test inidcator for:

Investigation of recurrent pyogenic or fungal infections especially chest, skin and gingival infections.

Diagnosis of chronic granulomatous disease(CGD) and other primary defects in neutrophil function.

Detection of CGD carriers.

Interpretation

Impairment of phagocytosis indicates impairment of oxidative blast may indicate CGD or even rarer neutrophil disorder which may be primary or secondary to ongoing pyogenic infection.

Specialised interpretation is required.
