Specimen

4.5 mL blood in 0.5 mL citrate.

Method

MAIPA; solid phase red cell adherence.

Application

Investigation of alloimmune thrombocytopenia, especially neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia and post-transfusion purpura.

Interpretation

Indicates the presence or absence of specific platelet antigens.

Platelets which lack the specific antigen are selected for platelet transfusion in alloimmune thrombocytopenia, if required.
