Item Process
Specimen

Timed or 24 hour urine collection with no preservative.

Method

Spectrophotometry.

Reference Interval

Method dependent - consult pathologist.

Application

Rarely indicated.

Suspected acute pancreatitis with normal serum amylase. Persistent, significant elevation of serum amylase if macroamylasaemia is suspected.

Interpretation

Urine level may be increased in acute pancreatitis at a time when the serum amylase level has returned to within the reference interval.

High serum and low urine amylase levels are seen in macroamylasaemia. Use of an amylase/creatinine clearance ratio is not recommended.
