Item Process
Specimen

5 mL blood in plain tube.

Method

Immunoassay

Reference Interval

Methodology dependent.

Application

Detection of specific IgE antibodies as an adjunct to allergy investigation where skin prick allergen testing is contraindicated, or unsuccessful, or when further interpretation is required.

Interpretation

A positive result to multiple aeroallergens indicates atopy.

In association with a suggestive clinical history, a positive result to a specific allergen supports a causative role for that allergen.
