Item Process
Specimen

2 mL blood in plain tube.

Method

Spectrophotometry.

Reference Interval

Method dependent. Typically 200-290 µmol/L.

Application

This test has a very limited role in monitoring diabetes mellitus; assessing control of blood glucose over the preceeding 1-3 weeks.

Interpretation

Increased values suggest significant persistent hyperglycaemia.

Levels are lower in the presence of hypoalbuminaemia.

The clinical utility of this test is limited and assay of glycated haemoglobin is generally preferred, see Glycated haemoglobin - red cell.
