Item Process
Specimen

5 mL amniotic fluid.

MethodImmunoassay, chromatography.
Reference Interval
Detectable when fetal lung maturity is present.
Application

Determination of fetal lung maturity, usually as an adjunct to lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio.

Interpretation

Phosphatidyl glycerol production commences at about the time lung maturity develops.

It may be more reliable for the assessment of fetal maturity in diabetic pregnancies than the lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio.
