Limited value in the diagnosis of sugar intolerance.
Unabsorbed sugars are fermented by bacteria in the large bowel to acids which lower faecal pH.
Faecal pH may be measured in association with faecal reducing substances. The test is, however, non-specific.
Low faecal pH in a person ingesting the suspected sugar supports the diagnosis of sugar intolerance.
