| Item | Process |
|---|---|
| Specimen | Freshly voided, random urine specimen without preservative. |
| Method | Hydrogen ion electrode or reagent strip. See also Urinalysis. |
| Reference Interval | Physiological range is 4.5-8.0. |
| Application | Investigation of renal tubular acidosis and monitoring urine pH for other reasons (eg, alkali therapy in cystinuria). |
| Interpretation | In general, urine pH reflects the pH of the blood. In distal renal tubular acidosis the urine pH is >5.3 during metabolic acidosis, whereas in normals, or in patients with proximal renal tubular acidosis, urine pH is <5.3 during metabolic acidosis. Acid urine is produced in metabolic alkalosis with potassium depletion, eg, in pyloric stenosis. |
