Specimen

10 mL blood in plain tube. Specimen transported on melting ice.

Method
  1. Lysis of red cells in agarose containing heat treated (50°C) normal serum.
  2. Nephelometry.
Reference Interval

Consult pathologist.

Application

Diagnosis of complement abnormalities; may assist in defining the cause of glomerulo­nephritis.

Interpretation

Reduced levels indicate activation of the alternative complement pathway.
