Method

Spectrophotometry, atomic absorption spectro­photometry.

Reference Interval

2.5-8.0 mmol/24 hours (related to daily intake).

ApplicationConfirmation of suspected urinary magnesium loss.
Interpretation

Decreased urinary magnesium in a patient with hypomagnesaemia indicates a non-renal cause.
