In vivo procedure which should only be performed by an experienced practitioner.

Method

Intradermal injection of standardized allergen solutions.

Reference Interval

Reaction diameter 3 mm greater than control.

Application

Role in testing for IgE-mediated drug allergy (esp penicillin) and stinging insect allergy. Only occasionally used with other allergen extracts.

Interpretation

Should be interpreted in association with clinical history. Should always be preceded by skin prick testing and performed only if skin prick testing is negative.
